Sum Revision
Revision that adds up
Sum Revision is an iPad revision app for senior students. Each topic has full notes with worked examples, and banks of exam-style questions to work with Apple Pencil, check against worked solutions and mark the way examiners do. There are also timed practice exams with a grade at the end.
Need help? Email nzvman75@icloud.com. It helps to include your iPad model, your iPadOS version and, if you can, a screenshot.
Common questions
Which courses does it cover?
- Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics (9709): Pure Mathematics 1 and 3, Mechanics, and Probability & Statistics 1 and 2.
- Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry (9701): the AS Level, with practice Papers 1 and 2.
- NCEA Level 3 Calculus: 91577, 91578 and 91579.

What’s free, and what does Unlock everything add?
Free: the notes and worked examples for every topic, 5 practice questions in every topic, and your first practice exam in each course. Unlock everything is a one-time purchase that adds every question (more than 11,000), Exam conditions quizzes, and as many practice exams as you like, in every course. There’s no subscription and no ads.
How do I restore my purchase on a new or reset iPad?
The purchase is tied to your Apple Account. Open Sum Revision, tap Unlock everything at the top of the course list, then tap Restore purchases. Make sure you’re signed in with the Apple Account you bought it with.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases are handled by Apple. You can ask for a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Does it need the internet?
No. All the notes, questions and maths typesetting are stored on the iPad, so it works anywhere. You only need a connection to buy or restore Unlock everything.
Do I need an Apple Pencil?
It works best with one, but you can write with your finger instead: in a quiz, tap the ••• button in the drawing tools and turn on drawing with your finger.
How do I mark my answers?
After you’ve worked a question, open the solution. For Cambridge questions, tick each mark-scheme point you earned; the app applies the examiners’ rules (for example, an A mark needs its M mark). For NCEA questions, compare your answer with “What a full answer shows” and choose N, A, M or E. Multiple-choice questions mark themselves.
Where are the formulae and the data booklet?
Chemistry has the data booklet and Periodic Table, and NCEA Statistics has the formulae and tables booklet. Open them with the button at the top right of the course page, of any notes page, or of any question, including in practice exams.
Are these real exam questions?
No. They are original questions written in the style of recent examinations, with answers checked by computer. Sum Revision is an independent revision resource; it is not made or endorsed by Cambridge International Education or NZQA.
I think an answer or mark scheme is wrong
Thank you, please tell me. Email nzvman75@icloud.com with the course, the topic and the first few words of the question (for Cambridge maths questions, the source line at the bottom of the solution helps too), and a screenshot if you can. Corrections are made to every question of that kind in the next update.
How do I move my progress to a new iPad?
Your progress is stored on your iPad and included in its normal backups. Restoring a backup to the new iPad, or transferring with Quick Start, brings it across. Progress isn’t synced between two iPads that are both in use.
Where is my work stored?
Only on your iPad: your quizzes, marks, grades, handwritten working and settings. Sum Revision has no accounts and no servers, and I can’t see any of it. See the privacy policy for details.
How do I delete my data?
Deleting the app removes everything it has stored on your iPad. To clear a single quiz you haven’t finished, tap Discard on the course page.
I’m a teacher. Can I use it with my class?
Yes, and I’d love to hear how it goes, including anything you’d change. Email nzvman75@icloud.com.
