Ownsmart Privacy Policy

Effective 9 October 2026

Ownsmart is an iPhone app made by Vaughan Mitchell (“I”, “me”). This policy explains what information the app uses and what happens to it.

Information the app uses on your iPhone

Your items and receipts

The things you add, such as items, receipts, photos, prices, purchase and warranty dates, serial numbers, manuals and notes, are stored inside the app on your iPhone.

Reading receipts

When you scan or share a receipt, Ownsmart reads it using Apple’s on-device text recognition and, on iPhones that support it, on-device Apple Intelligence. This happens entirely on your iPhone. Your receipts are not sent to me or to any other service.

Camera

Used only when you choose to scan a receipt, label or serial number. Photos you take are stored inside the app.

Photos and files

You can add receipts and pictures from Photos or Files, or by sharing them to Ownsmart from another app. You choose them in Apple’s picker or share sheet, and the app only receives the items you pick. It cannot see the rest of your photo library or files.

Notifications

Reminders before return windows and warranties end are scheduled on your iPhone. They are not sent from a server.

Face ID

If you turn on the app lock, Apple’s system checks your face or passcode and only tells Ownsmart whether the check passed. The app never receives your Face ID data.

iCloud sync (optional)

If you turn on iCloud sync, your items are also stored in the private iCloud database of your own Apple Account, so they appear on your other devices. Apple runs iCloud under its own privacy policy, and I can’t access your iCloud data.

Finding manuals (optional)

If you tap Find the manual online, the item’s brand and model (or its name) are sent as a search to DuckDuckGo, and the pages you open come from the websites you choose, which have their own privacy policies. If you save a manual, Ownsmart downloads that file from the website and keeps it with the item on your iPhone.

What is shared

Nothing, unless you choose to share it. Ownsmart has no servers of its own, and I do not receive, collect or have access to any of your data. I do not sell or share information with advertisers, data brokers or anyone else.

Claim emails are drafted for you and sent from your own Mail app, to whoever you choose. Exports (PDF or CSV) go wherever you send or save them. Links in the app, such as a manufacturer’s website, open in your browser, and those websites have their own privacy policies.

Purchases

Ownsmart Pro is bought through Apple’s App Store. Apple handles the payment, and I do not receive your name, email address or payment details.

Backups

Like other apps, Ownsmart’s data is included in your iPhone’s backups (iCloud Backup or a backup on your computer), depending on how you have set up your device. Those backups are handled by Apple under your Apple account settings.

Apple

Ownsmart is downloaded through Apple’s App Store, which Apple runs under its own privacy policy. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers, Apple may give me crash reports and usage statistics that do not identify you.

Deleting your information

You can delete any item inside the app at any time. Deleting the app removes everything it has stored on your iPhone. If you used iCloud sync, you can delete Ownsmart’s iCloud data in the iPhone Settings app: tap your name, then iCloud → Manage Storage → Ownsmart.

Your rights

Because I hold none of your information, there is nothing for me to access, correct or delete. Everything is under your control on your iPhone and in your iCloud account. This policy is written to meet the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, the Australian Privacy Principles, the UK and EU General Data Protection Regulation, and Canada’s PIPEDA.

Children

Ownsmart does not collect information from anyone, including children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
